TB-303 pot/kobs replacement info

Another tip for TB-303 pot/knobs remplacement by the 303 hardware wizard Robin Whittle himself.

"TB-303 pots have not been obtainable from Roland for many years. They are no longer produced by ALPS. (Maybe you can still get a tempo or volume pot from ALPS or even Roland.)

Finally, ALPS has a web site: http://www.alps.com/

The best replacement I know of, is to get a Panasonic pot and adapt it.

The Panasonic site is labyrinthine . . . they are under "Passive and Electromechanical Components"

http://www.panasonic.com/industrial_oem/electronic_components/electronic_components_home.htm

From there choose "Potentiometers and Encoders" and you can download a .PDF file.

The Panasonic and Digikey ( http://www.digikey.com ) part numbers are:

Dual 50K Log EVJ-Y10F03R54 P2G1503-ND
Dual 50K Lin EVJ-Y91F03B54 P2E9503-ND

The TB-303 pots are:

Tuning 50K Lin
Cut Off 50K Log
Resonance Dual 50K Log
Env Mod 50K Log
Decay 1M Lin
Accent 50K Lin

Don't try the single versions of these pots. The Dual has a wider base, and so is closer to the mounting arrangement you want.

The dual Panasonic pots have the same pinout as the original Alps resonance pot, so you should be able to wire it up directly, though I think the pins are slightly differently spaced.

For the single pots, just use pins 3, 4 and 5 of the dual pot.

The Panasonic shafts are flatted rounds, not splines as in the Alps pots. (I have scrutinized the Panasonic site, it it seems they don't do spline shafts at all.) To use the TB-303 knob with the Panasonic pot, you will need to very carefully file or gouge or whatever most of the knob's splines so it will fit the shaft. I left 7 splines intact. You will probably want to file the tip of the shaft down as well. A bit of Blu-Tak will help hold the knob in place. (Alternatively, perhaps filing the shaft into a square or triangle might make it fit the knob snuggle.)

The shaft is the right length.

The linear pot has a centre detent. (Digikey has no dual 50K pots in this range without detent.) I got rid of this by opening the pot (bend the four lugs at the rear) and filing away something. (My notes are not exact, but it would be obvious once you open it up.)

Also, I removed quite a bit of grease from the shaft bearing area to make the pot easier to turn. I suggest this for all these Panasonic pots - linear and log.

If you get some log and linears of these dual pots, then this covers you for all pots except the Decay pot - which is 1 Meg and so is outside the
range carried by Digikey.

My best suggestion for the Decay pot is a smallish 9mm single 1 Meg Lin pot which I bought from Altronics in Western Australia. It is made by
some Niga-naga-woki company called "Alpha" - not to be confused with the esteemed Japanese **ALPS** who make the most beautiful and reliable pots.

These are a "R 1930" from http://www.altronics.com.au .

They have a small base, so they could be difficult to mount securely. Their shaft is round, so I suggest you file it down to a square or triangular shape which fits snuggly into the knob. Maybe this would be a good approach for the Panasonic pots too.

I haven't actually used one of these yet, and I have only used one Panasonic pot so far. So all the above is based on research and one actual use so far.

This is the sort of work which should be done by a technician. If you don't have a lot of soldering and electronic experience, then there is a big risk that you will damage the machine. Since TB-303 are rare and expensive beasts, I urge you to get the work done by someone who is unlikely to make a mess of it.

I have not found any decent replacements for the TB-303's small knobs.

The best I can suggest are Altronics grey hard rubbery knobs with coloured plastic indicator lines. They are longer than the TB-303 pots, but they sit at the same height, so they extend further inside the TB-303. If the TB-303 is a Devil Fish, then you should trim off the bottom rim of plastic with a knife so it does not hit the rear panel Devil Fish PCB. They are nice to grip! Its a pity they don't extend any higher. You probably could pack them with something and make them a mm or two higher, but then they may fall off.

They are:

H 6020 Red H 6022 Blue H 6024 Grey
H 6026 Purple H 6028 Green H 6030 Black

These knobs don't look as good, I think, as the standard knobs but they are much better to grip.

The bases of these knobs are narrower than the TB-303s. One of the benefits of the TB-303's knobs is that sideways forces are borne by the knob against the top case, rather than bending the pot shaft. Such bending whilst rotating can easily destroy the pot, because the standard pots have a cylindrical rim of plastic which takes such pressure and runs over the conductive tracks. This can cut through the conductive tracks!

These new knobs do not fit like this, so please be careful not to move the knob side-to-side because that will strain the pot and probably cause premature failure.

NEVER SPRAY ANYTHING in POTS or SWITCHES unless you want to really foul up your equipment for good.

Never glue knobs to pot shafts either! Use "Blu-tak" or whatever the local species of "stick posters on wall with putty-like *stuff*" is called in your locality.

The above is the absolute sum-total of my knowledge - so please don't ask for further instructions. Please do suggest better alternatives!
See my Devil Fish site for notes on the tact switches in the TB-303, TR-606 and TR-808. http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/
I will post this email to the site at some stage and keep an updated version of it there.

TB-303 potentiometers replacement !

Trevor Page sent me a tip to replace the TB-303 potentiometers wich are often dead on some second-hands TBs. Here is the description and a picture of his modifications. Mail him to get more infos about it.

"In my TB303 I found it necessary to replace all six upper Alps potentiometers (Tune, Resonance, Cutoff etc etc) because all of mine were starting to fail. I successfully replaced all of these by making a bracket made from a piece of copper clad board and mouting ordinary panel-mounted Alps pots to this, which can be obtained very easily. I've enclosed a diagram which shows roughly how I did this. It's rather sketchy but I think you will get the picture !"

TB-303/DevilFish Alucases !

Martin Röthlisberger from Switzerland is manufacturing Alucases for the TB-303 and DevilFish in various colors and fashions.

From simple silver aluminium to fancy orange/blue/pink cases.

The Devil Fish 303 Modifications

DevilFish The Devil Fish is a set of internal TB-303 hardware modifications which allow you to get a larger definition within the 303 sound. Robin Whittle, who is the inventor of the Devil Fish concept, is back to bussiness with version 2.1. By clicking the Devil Fish Mod plate, you'll get all infos about price, how to order, how it works and so on ...

Robin could also add extra memory to the TB-303 with switches, and with this modification you can also switches pattern banks while still running the sequencer !!!

This guy is really the TB-303 WIZARD !!!

The 303 BORG Modifications

At Analogue solution in UK, they are developing a new hardware sound mod for the 303 called "BORG". It's a bit the same concept of the DevilFish, some plus and some minus, but will be cheaper (£195).

Rackmounted 303

Rackmounted 606

At Analogue solution in UK, they have some kits to rackmount your 303 with a 5U rack (like the 606 on the picture) for keeping intact all controls, or with a 1U rack adding external CV/GATE controls

VARIOUS TIPS & TRICKS

As the 303 is a bit 'closed' we can't bring you a lot of cool tricks, but anyway if you know cool way to modify the sounds, the lines ... then drop me a mail.

Here are a few interesting things :

lower or jumper completely
r46 and r119.. that should do it.. It should cause the accents to go from
subtle to outrageously loud..
perform at own risk, but it should be perfectly safe..

Just a funny effect for the TB

Try to find a jack without the plastic ring then plug it
into the gate output,

Sound goes like it have a really fast vibrato on it, like

Primitive midi sync and timing hint for your 303

jkimble@engin.umich.edu
From: john hamilton kimble
Subject: 303 tricks

hey I think you should start a 303 mailing list!
anyways here is a cool trick for ya,
OK this is a tough one :)
make a cable out of a 5 pin DIN cable that only has the start/stop pin in the
end connector (either cut the other four pins out or pull them out with pliers
then, you can use a spare midi devide that outputs a sharp short sound
like a drum sound, or something.
now you program the midi device to play every four beats.
adjust the volume level on the MIDI device to pulse to 5V
when it is triggered (you may need to amplify the signal to get 5V)
now you can use this to primitively sync the 303 to midi
or you can create cool effects by changing the 303 tempo knob, because it will
always start over every 4 bars, but the lines will repeat or be cut off,
bdepending on the 303 tempo, (because the tempo is still controlled
internally!)

To make your 303 even more "elastic" sounding. play with resistor R47
located on the frequency pot pin 2. I changed it to 100k by accident on
my homebuilt clone and the sound was better than the original!

THE START/STOP 303 MOD

cdmaster@netcom.com
From: MACHINE MEDIA
Subject: 303 Sync Mod??

> IF no sync cable plugged in

So put the mod in the cable. That way you don't have to drill holes in
your 303 and you might be able to use it for other xoxboxes.

> ELSE
> IF switch set one way
> 303 works normally - tempo and start/stop come from sync cable

> Has anyone ever tried this? it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to do.
> Any suggestions?

Sure, get a five pin DIN cable from Rat Shack, cut it open, find where
the conductor that carries on/off is (the other live wire will have the
clock pulse), splice in a SPST switch on this conductor, splice the
other four back together. Opening the switch should make the 303 stop.
Closing it should make it start. The insertion of the Sync24 cable into
the 303 is what disconnects its own clock and stop/start from itself (the
jack has switches and even a clear plastic window so you can watch it
happen :) I have not tried this, but I think this should work.

PEACE OUT :)

ADDITIONAL INPUTS MODS

You can get various additional inputs to your TB quite easily, here's the list and standard prices :

Here's a mail from a guy who checked the external box :

From: Jacktrippy@aol.com
Subject: midi 303/Kenton Pro-4

Man I got the Kenton 303 socket kit put in finally and it works wicked with
the Pro-4. It adds cv/gate input and also inputs to control the filter,
slide and accent. I can finally make the dam box swing! As in shuffle feel.
It also gives you more range in the filter letting it open up to the point
of white noise distortion. And the clincher is midi synchable lfo's!
Peace
the acid xpander

MIDI CONTROLS

You can add full midi control over your TB as easily, here's the list too :

THE BASSFACE BY SND

The BassFace is an external box, made in grey just like the TB, which enable you to bring out the TB-303 sequences (via CV/GATE out) to any other midi synth, or even sequencers ...

This tool has the following controls :

This box is really magic ! You can drive any midi destination with this and add a different tone to your basslines, it works pretty good, and you can even save your lines to any sequencer with this tool.

It's the stand-alone version of the A2M module (analog to midi interface for all hybrid sequencers) and you can use it even with the MC-202 and the SH-101 !

The BassFace is sold by TOUCHED BY SOUND (see the adress page) and costs 690.- DM
